Growing up on the impoverished and crime-ridden Left Side, Ash and Maya have always been quiet shadows in each other’s peripheral vision. On the cusp of adulthood, though, they are paired up for a peculiar assignment, and while they piece together the buried history of their city, they also trade their own histories and secret hopes, offering each other the one thing neither has ever had: true understanding.
But this friendship has an expiration date.
Ash has one goal: escape. Leave Left Side and the criminal underworld he’s trapped in, and never come back. But Maya can’t leave, as her stubborn crusade to save her scattered family binds her to the only place she considers home. What’s growing between them may cost more than any of them can afford to pay. And yet, neither can let go.
But then Maya witnesses something she shouldn’t and gets pulled into the very world Ash is trying to flee. As the net tightens around her, Ash must face a hard choice: walk away and secure the freedom he’s bled for, or stay and risk everything for the girl who refuses to run.
